Circle of Joseph Highmore

British, (1692-1780)
Portrait of a Lady in a Grey Silk Dress
Oil on canvas

An excellent quality half-length portrait of a lady in a feigned oval, circle of Joseph Highmore. The subject, posed without her wig wears a grey robe over a grey silk dress, finished with a blue silk ribbon and fringed with fine lace. Her dress and bearing indicate this is a lady of some standing. The artist has placed the sitter in a landscape, which at the time was not only used to convey the status of the person but also to add a sense of depth or perspective. The portrait has clearly been painted by an artist of great ability who has been influenced by Joseph Highmore.

Joseph Highmore was born on 13 June 1692. He was a portrait and historical painter who initially trained in law after being discouraged from taking up painting as a career. He studied under Geoffrey Kneller and made a name for himself painting portraits of the Knights of the order of Bath. He received commissions from the royal family and the nobility as well as the wealthy middle classes. Highmore retired to Canterbury where he died in 1780. He is buried in Canterbury Cathedral.

Presentation The painting is housed in a period gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
