Dommersen was a Dutch painter who specialised in views of Dutch estuaries, marine, coastal and town scenes. He inherited his talent for painting from his father, Pieter Cornelis Dommersen (1834-1908) who painted similar views of Holland and his uncle Cornelis Christian Dommersen (1842-1928). His family originally came from Utrecht in Holland and their name was Dommershuizen, which in fact remains so as it was never changed by deed poll. The family anglicised the name to Dommersen as a matter of convenience when they moved to England in 1861. Dommersen travelled extensively in Europe on painting expeditions with his father who no doubt influenced his techniques, as there is a marked similarity in style.
The painting is housed in new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
