James Salt

British, (1823-1864)
Venetian Capriccio’s
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed
Provenance: Cider House Galleries

James Salt was a painter of Venetian scenes who worked during the mid 19th century. Previously, very little was known about his life, however further research has uncovered more of his story. He was born James Richard Salt in Bilston, Wolverhampton in 1823, to William Salt and Edith Oldacre. By the age of 15 he was working as an apprentice Japanner in Temple Street, Wolverhampton. The area was well known for Japanning, having been established in Wolverhampton and Bilston towards the end of the 18th century.

After serving his apprenticeship he moved to Manchester to work as an artist. He married Charlotte Wright on February 23, 1846 and the couple’s first two children Edith and Josephine were born there. However, by 1851 they had returned to Bilston where Salt took up Japanning again, probably to supplement his income for his growing family. The couple had 3 more children and his daughters Edith and Louisa inherited his artistic talent, also becoming Japanners. He died 10 November, 1864 at 8 Lichfield Street, Bilston.

Although Salt does not appear to have exhibited, his popular works would have found a ready market through art dealers and galleries. Salt’s works are confidently and meticulously painted. He is able to capture the atmosphere and charm of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
