Grand Tour Bronze

The Seated Mercury
Italian, (19th century)
Foundry mark for Sommer, Napoli

19th century Grand Tour Italian bronze of the seated Mercury, after the antique. Mercury was the Roman god of finance, commerce, merchants and travelers whose winged sandals helped him fly faster than other gods. Grand Tour bronzes were typically models of ancient Roman remains made for the 18th and 19th century tourists visiting ancient Roman sites. This finely cast bronze is after the original Roman artifact discovered during excavations at the Villa of Papyri in Herculaneum. It bears a foundry mark for Sommer of Napoli.
