Alphonse Arson was born in Paris on 11 January 1822. He studied art under Joseph Combette (1770-1840) who helped him discover his talent for sculpture and introduced him to bird subjects. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1859 and continued to exhibit there regularly. He won a number of accolades during his lifetime including honourable mentions and a bronze medal at the Salon in 1877. Many of the groups he produced were of small animals and birds such as pheasants and partridges. Arson’s skill was in his ability inject humour into his works and many of his animals were modelled in anthropomorphic activities or poses such as this wonderful example.
