Alfred Dubucand was a French sculptor born in Paris on 25 November 1828. He studied under Alexandre-Victor Lequien (1822-1905) and Antoine Louis Barye (1796 -1875) and made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Salon regularly over the years. Dubucand specialised in animal sculptures, usually equestrian groups and was also particularly interested in the nomadic peoples of North Africa, portraying Arab tribesmen and nomads with horses and camels. His bronzes area always exceptionally finished and a few of his best examples feature varying colours such as this fine example. He died in 1894.
