Otto Wilhelm Eduard Erdmann was born in Leipzig on 7 December 1834, the son of the chemist Otto Linné Erdmann. He studied at the Leipzig Academy before going to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. From there he then went onto the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich where he studied under the genre painter Ludwig von Hagn (1820-1898). By 1858, he had made his way to Düsseldorf where he became a member of the artists' association, ‘Malkasten’ and sat on its Board of Directors for many years. Around 1870, he created a series of engravings for the Belgian publication European illustrations. Erdmann specialised in intimate portraits and historical genre paintings in the rococo style often with a humorous or romantic nature. His works are highly detailed and richly coloured with well executed figures and expressive faces. He died in Düsseldorf in 1905.
