13.5 inches x 11.5 inches

Charles Jones was a London animal painter who was well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones. He was originally of Welsh extraction and was born near Cardiff, although for most of his artistic career he was based in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1860 –1891, at the British Institute, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society and elsewhere from 1861 – 1883. He was a full member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and around 1890 was awarded a gold medal at the Crystal Palace Exhibition.
