Benjamin Cam Norton was born in Guildford, Surrey on 7 April 1835 to John Norton a barber and his wife Katharine Norton. His father was honorary secretary to the London Art Union which was undoubtedly connected to his son’s education. By the age of 16 he was living in Middlesex and in 1857 he enrolled at the Academy Schools. He exhibited at the Royal Institute from 1862. By 1871, he was married and was living with his wife and two children at Gainsborough House, Bath Rd. Cheltenham. He later moved to Newmarket where he died in 1900. Norton specialised in horse and animal portraits often attending the races at Cheltenham, Doncaster, Liverpool and Newmarket to paint racehorses on the course. Examples of his paintings can be found at the Rotherham Museum and the Regimental Museum.
