William Arthur Breakspeare
British, (1855-1914)

The Fountain
Oil on panel, signed
13.5 inches x 9.5 inches

William Arthur Breakspeare was a London genre and figurative painter who was active during the latter half of the 19th century. He studied in Paris and was greatly influenced by Thomas Couture. Breakspeare was a foundation member of the Birmingham Art Circle and was also a member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1891–1903 as well as at Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. His subjects are mainly genre and 18th century costume pieces and his depiction of characters are heightened by the treatment of their dress, which concentrates heavily on externals and the rich decoration. All these elements make for a winning formula that has made Breakspeare’s works enduringly popular.
