Josef Wagner-Höhenberg was a genre, portrait and historical painter who was born in Höhenberg, Germany in 1870. He was the father of the genre painter Fritz Wagner (1896-1967). He studied at the Florence Academy of Art as well as in Munich and later became a member of the Munich school of painting. Wagner-Höhenberg specialised in painting finely detailed tavern scenes of the German working class. Due to his ability to capture emotion and give portrait-like features to his subjects he is considered one of the most gifted 19th-century German artists of his era. Examples of his work can be found in many private and public art collections including the Witt Library.
