Eberhard Stammel was German artist from the Düsseldorf School of painting who was born on September 19, 1833 in Düren. He was the son of Franz Stammel , a shopkeeper and Theresia Johanna ( nee Brauweiler). He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts from 1847 to 1852, and was tutored by Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867). Stammel travelled to Antwerp, Paris and Munich to continue his studies, returning to Düsseldorf in 1859 to take up residence there. Although initially focussing on historical scenes and portraits, he moved on to specialise in ironic genre scenes particularly of the middle class. He exhibited regularly in Berlin, Dusseldorf and Munich and his works were highly popular often reproduced as engravings in numerous magazines. In 1861 he exhibited at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1866. At both exhibitions, Kaiser Wihelm I purchased one of his paintings; the latter having a similar title to this fine painting and which could well be the same one. Stammel was a member of the artists' association Malkasten which was founded in Düsseldorf in 1848 and is still in existence today. He died in January 1906 in Düsseldorf.
