John Sanderson-Wells was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1872. He later moved to London and lived in Acton. He studied at the Slade School of Art and also at Julien’s Paris and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1895, continuing to exhibit regularly there. He also exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours , Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. As well as exhibiting in London he also exhibited at the provincial art galleries such as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In 1903 he was elected to the royal institute. He died in Ealing in 1955. Sanderson- Wells specialised in equestrian subjects as well as historical genre scenes, however it is for his sporting and coaching scenes that he is best known. Examples of his work can be found in a number of public collections including the Oxford Museum, Sheffield Museum, V&A, The Whitaker and the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum.
