Charles Henry Passey was a landscape artist born in Shelton near Stoke on Trent in 1847. His parents were Edward and Maria Passey who were both from Worcestershire and his father was a commercial traveller. The family moved to the St Luke's area of Islington, North London when Passey was still very young. He married Helen Samuel in 1878 and together they lived in Clapham. In the same year, he started exhibiting at Suffolk Street, The Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He died in Hampstead in 1898 aged 50.

Passey painted landscape scenes of Surrey and Kent however, he also travelled to Yorkshire to paint the views there. Many of his works feature harvesting or sheep in winding lanes such as this lovely example. Examples of his work can be found in public collections including the Guildford House Gallery and the Salford Museum and Art Gallery.
