James D Barnett was a landscape artist who lived at Crouch End, Hornsey. He specialised in townscapes and views of Britain, Northern France, Belgium and the Rhine. Many of his works include views of cities or towns with rivers such as this fine example. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1855 to 1872 and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Dowdeswell Galleries and Manchester Art Gallery.
An example of his work is held by the Witt Library.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
