Fishing by the Mill
British, (1840-1921)
Oil on canvas, signed with initials

Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr was a London landscape painter, who was born in the Kingston upon Thames area in 1840. Later, the family moved to Greenwich and he began his working life as a railway clerk before becoming a full time painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institute and Suffolk Street from 1865 to 1903.

Glendening lived for a time in Hampton, Middlesex before returning to Greenwich later on in his life. He was a popular landscape artist of his time working in many parts of the British Isles. He enjoyed painting the dramatic landscapes of Wales and the Scottish Highlands as well as views of the southern counties, particularly the Thames, Surrey and Sussex. His son and pupil was Alfred Glendening Junior (1861-1907) and they both painted landscapes in a broad and realistic style. Glendening died in Greenwich in 1921.

The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
